A Beginners Guide to Choosing the Right EV Charger in Northern Ireland
So you've gone and bought yourself an electric car. Fair play to ye. You've done the research, you've test driven it, you've probably told everyone at work about the running costs. But now you're standing on the driveway looking at your shiny new EV and thinking — how in the name of God am I going to charge this thing?
If you're currently trailing a 3-pin extension lead out the front door, I'm not judging you. We've all seen it. But a standard 3-pin plug charges at around 2.3kW — meaning a full charge can take 30 hours or more depending on your battery size. It's slow, it's not designed for regular overnight use, and it's not exactly what you'd call a permanent solution.
Every dedicated home EV charger on this list charges at 7kW — roughly three times faster than a 3-pin plug. That means most EVs go from empty to full overnight, every night, without you even thinking about it.
I'm Kyle from All Charge NI. As one of Northern Ireland's most trusted EV charger installers, I've fitted hundreds of home EV chargers right across the country — from South Belfast to Bushmills, Holywood to Londonderry. I've seen every make, every model, and every dodgy DIY attempt you can imagine.
In this guide, I'm going to give you the no-nonsense, straight-talking installer's view on how to choose the right home EV charger in Northern Ireland. No waffle, no jargon — just the craic.
First Things First — They're All Smart Chargers
Before I get into the individual units, here's something worth knowing upfront: every single charger on this list is a smart charger that charges at 7kW. That means every one of them connects to an app on your phone, and every one of them lets you set a charging schedule so your car charges overnight when electricity is at its cheapest.
You set it up once, and from that point on your car is always fully charged by the time you need it in the morning — without you lifting a finger. If you're on a good overnight tariff like Share Energy (currently the cheapest electricity provider in Northern Ireland), you'll be charging your car for a fraction of what it would cost during the day. Over the course of a year, the savings are genuinely significant.
So when I break down the differences between these chargers below, it's not about which ones are smart and which ones aren't — they all are, and they all charge at 7kW. It's about which one suits your specific home, your setup, and your priorities.
Tethered vs Untethered: What Does That Even Mean?
This is the first thing I explain on every home survey, and it's simpler than it sounds.
Tethered Chargers have the cable permanently attached to the wall unit — just like a petrol pump. You pull up, grab the cable, plug it into the car, and away you go. Dead handy, especially when it's hammering down outside (and let's face it, in Northern Ireland that's most of the year). The only downside is that the cable is always hanging there on the wall, which some people aren't mad about aesthetically.
Untethered (Socketed) Chargers are just a socket on the wall. You use the cable that came with your car, plug one end into the wall and the other into the vehicle. It looks much neater when the car isn't plugged in, but it means rooting around in the boot for your cable every single time you come home. For most people, that gets old very quickly.
My Verdict: Nine times out of ten, I recommend tethered. When you've just finished a long day's work and you're pulling onto the driveway in the dark and the rain, the last thing you want to be doing is wrestling a cable out of the boot. Grab it off the wall, plug it in, go put the kettle on. Job done.
What About Solar Panels?
Right, this is where it gets interesting — and where a lot of people miss a trick.
If you have solar panels on your roof, or you're thinking about getting them fitted, you need to think carefully about which EV charger you buy. A standard 7kW charger will just pull electricity straight from the grid. That's fine, but it's not making the most of what you've got.
A solar-compatible EV charger can detect when your solar panels are generating more electricity than your house is using, and automatically divert that surplus energy into your car's battery. Instead of sending free electricity back to the grid for next to nothing, you're driving on power you've already paid for. Over the course of a year, the savings are genuinely significant.
Not every charger handles this equally well, so if solar is part of your plan — now or in the future — make sure you're buying the right unit from the start. I'll point you in the right direction below.
The Installer's Honest Top 5
I've fitted a lot of chargers. Some are brilliant. Some are a nightmare. Some have apps that crash more often than a learner driver on the Westlink. Here are the five that genuinely stand out — and remember, every single one of them charges at 7kW with full smart app control.
1. Sync EV — The Best Value for Money
If your budget is the main consideration and you don't want to compromise on quality, the Sync EV is your man. It's a solid, reliable 7kW smart charger that does everything you need — overnight scheduling, app control, energy monitoring — without any unnecessary bells and whistles. The app is clean and easy to use.
The Sync comes in both tethered and untethered versions. Worth knowing though — the untethered (socketed) version doesn't come with a cable included, so you'd need to supply your own. The clever bit is that you can actually lock a Type 2 cable into the socket, which effectively turns it into a tethered charger of whatever cable length suits your driveway. So if you want the neat look of a socket on the wall but the convenience of a cable always being there, the Sync gives you the best of both worlds.
For a lot of homeowners across Northern Ireland, the Sync is the sweet spot between price and performance. It's not the flashiest charger on this list, but it'll charge your car every single night without giving you a minute's bother.
2. Ohme Home Pro — The One for Dodgy Wi-Fi
The Ohme is one of the most popular 7kW home chargers in the UK right now, and it's easy to see why. Like all the chargers on this list, it's fully smart — you can schedule overnight charging through the app, set it to run during the cheapest rate periods, and monitor your energy usage. Pair it with a Share Energy tariff and you're charging your car at the lowest possible cost in Northern Ireland.
But here's the real reason I love the Ohme for NI homes: it has a built-in 3G/4G SIM card. Half the houses I go to in rural Antrim, Down, or Tyrone have Wi-Fi that doesn't reach the front of the house, never mind the driveway. With the Ohme, that doesn't matter. It stays connected through the mobile network regardless, so your smart charging schedule never drops out. If your Wi-Fi is a bit hit and miss, this is the one.
3. Zappi — The Solar King
If you have solar panels, this is the one. Full stop. The Zappi, made by Myenergi, is the best solar-integrated 7kW EV charger on the market, and it's not particularly close.
Like the others, it's a fully smart charger with overnight scheduling and app control. But where it goes further is in how it handles solar. It has three charging modes — including "Eco+" which will only charge your car using the surplus electricity your solar panels are generating. If a cloud comes over and your panels dip, it pauses. When the sun comes back out, it picks up where it left off. You are genuinely driving on free energy.
It's a slightly bigger unit on the wall than some of the others, but when you consider what it's doing behind the scenes, that's a small price to pay. If you've invested in solar, the Zappi is the charger that makes that investment work as hard as possible.
4. Zaptec Go — The All-Rounder
The Zaptec Go is designed in Norway, which tells you everything you need to know — the Norwegians have been driving EVs longer than anyone else in the world, and they know what they're doing.
It's a tiny unit, about the size of a tablet, and it sits flush against the wall so neatly that visitors won't even notice it's there. The Zaptec is an untethered (socketed) charger and doesn't come with a cable included — but just like the Sync, you can lock a Type 2 cable into the socket. That means you can choose exactly how long you want the cable to be for your driveway, and once it's locked in, it functions exactly like a tethered charger. It's a really practical solution for homes where the standard tethered cable lengths don't quite reach.
It's a fully smart 7kW charger with excellent app control, overnight scheduling, load balancing, and energy monitoring, and it comes with a 5-year warranty. If you want a charger that does everything well, looks brilliant, and won't give you any grief, the Zaptec is your answer.
5. Hypervolt — The Flashy One
Right, I'll be straight with you. The Hypervolt is the charger you buy when you want people to notice it. It's a premium 7kW tethered smart charger with LED lights that pulse and change colour depending on what it's doing. Charging? One colour. Fully charged? Another. It even works with Amazon Alexa, so you can literally say "Alexa, charge my car" and it'll kick in.
Like all the others, you can schedule overnight charging through the app and set it to run on the cheapest tariff. It just also happens to look like something out of a sci-fi film while it's doing it. If you want your charger to be a talking point, this is the one.
So Which One Should You Get?
Here's the quick version. All five charge at 7kW, all five are smart chargers, and all five will have your car fully charged every morning. The difference is in the details:
Got solar panels? Get the Zappi.
Rubbish Wi-Fi at the front of the house? Get the Ohme.
Want the best value for money? Get the Sync EV.
Want something small, smart, and discreet? Get the Zaptec Go.
Want to be the talk of the street? Get the Hypervolt.
And whatever you go for — make sure you're on Share Energy for your electricity tariff. They're currently the cheapest provider in Northern Ireland, and when you pair their overnight rate with any of these smart chargers, you'll be charging your car for buttons.
